Atlas Salt Inc. is developing the Great Atlantic Salt Project near St. George’s in western Newfoundland, Canada, which would be the first new salt mine in North America in almost three decades. The shallow deposit lies two kilometres from a deepwater port and is planned as a predominantly electric operation on the provincial grid. Under an expanded memorandum of understanding, Sweden’s Sandvik Mining is to supply around C$132 million of electrified and automated underground equipment and services. The 2025 updated feasibility study puts construction cost at C$589 million, after-tax value at C$920 million and payback at 4.2 years. Financing letters of interest now exceed C$300 million.
